Discussion:
www.winkde.org outage

Hi all,

as some people already noticed, the www.winkde.org server is currently
broken because of a hardware failure.

Until the server is up, the following workaround could be used for KDE
on Windows Software installations.

1. download the installer from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/kde-windows/files/installer/kdewin-installer-gui-0.9.9-8.exe/download

2. create a download directory and add a file named 'mirrors-remote.lst'
with the following content:
http de http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/kde

3. Start installer, unselect 'skip settings' checkbox if visible, set
the directory created in 2. as download directory.

Now you should be able to install KDE at least from ftp5.gwdg.de

Ralf,

Thanks for the quick response to the comment I added to KDE bug 316204
and the proposed workaround.

I'm in the eastern US and tried the installer link last night about 2
hours after receiving your reply. It was invalid. The installer
directory was visible on the SF site, but could not be accessed.
Perhaps the changes you made had not propagated through the entire SF
system yet. Being familiar with SF URL formats, I tried the following:

http://netcologne.dl.sourceforge.net/project/kde-windows/installer/kdewin-installer-gui-0.9.9-8.exe

It worked and I was able to download the 32-bit installer.

Following up on my bug comment, this new file is the same size as the
one I retrieved previously via FTP from www.winkde.org, but is not a
binary equivalent. So it does seem like the file is corrupt on the
other server(s), or those server(s) is/are corrupting the file upon
download.

I created a directory "C:\kdewin" for downloading, created the file
mirrors-remote.lst in that directory, and ran the installer. I chose
"download only". It asked for an installation directory and suggested
"C:\ProgramData\KDE" (running W7). This seemed to me like an odd place
to store executables, so I changed it to "C:\Program Files\KDE". I
chose "End User" and "MSVC" for install mode. I entered "C:\kdewin" as
the download path. The installer then displayed an error "failed to
download site list page from http://downloads.sourceforge.net/kde-windows/".

Here is the kdewin-installer.log content:

Looks like prerequisite software is missing, although the installer did
not tell me that through the GUI. Also looks like the config.txt file
may have an invalid entry in it, and that the installer tried to
download another file using an invalid URL (file name is missing).

Based on what I'm seeing, I'm going to give up on this. All I wanted to
do was install the Kate text editor on Windows. I'm a developer, so the
idea of building software doesn't bother me, but in this case I'm just
an end-user who wants an installer that provides a runnable Windows
application.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Jeff

Using

works for me.

As an alternative you may leave mirrors-remote.lst empty, so that the installer do not look for mirrors on the remote locations and enter the above mentioned url in the Download Servers Settings page.

Please use the above mentioned url. Because og the mirror list server
failure there are no valid mirror urls available.
I'm going to find a better fallback location for this mirror list.

or

Ralf,

I created the mirrors-remote.lst exactly as per your instructions. It
had a single line "http de http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/kde" with CRLF
as EOL marker. I tried changing that to
"http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/kde" and it did not work. I tried
changing it to
"http://netcologne.dl.sourceforge.net/project/kde-windows/releases " and
it did not work. I tried an empty lst file and it did not work. I also
tried all of the preceding without the CRLF EOL marker and that did not
work either. I tried moving the installer to the C:\kdewin directory
thinking maybe that would help the installer find the lst file and that
did not work. No matter what I do the installer is trying to download
from the SF site. It seems like the installer cannot find the lst file
or is ignoring it for some reason.

Also, when trying the empty lst file approach you suggested, I did not
see a "Download Servers Settings" page anywhere while running the installer.

Thanks,
Jeff

I have not been able to download/install any kde-for-Windows for my
Windows8 setup. One version would download, but not install, the latest
that you are talking about here will not even download.

Hi all,

the KDE on Windows installer is now available through the KDE mirror
network.

To download the installer you may use the regular download links provided by

http://windows.kde.org

or directly by using the link

http://download.kde.org/stable/kdewin/installer/kdewin-installer-gui-latest.exe.mirrorlist

Have Fun

If I type that URL into a browser it resolves to
http://sourceforge.net/projects/kde-windows/files/.

Really curious about the 1.0 version!

Im getting a
"failed to download site list page from

the sourceforge url is a fallback. It indicates that the installer is
somehow not been able to fetch the site list page from the primary
location, which is http://download.kde.org/stable/4.8.0 when you select
"download.kde.org" as mirror, "stable 4.8.0" as release and the proxy
settings are correct and your network connection works.
Post by Mogliii

Really curious about the 1.0 version!
Using sourceforge as fallback worked for several years, but in the last
month they has been proved as not been reliable enough. In fact there
url redirection seems to be broken.
This is one of the reasons why we switched over to the kde mirror
network. Because www.winkde.org is currently offline there is no working
fallback yet.

BTW: This installer has been used about 85.000 times a month in the
last 7 years, so I guess there is a solution for your problem: :-)

Ralf
